Samsung Gear VR is a piece of hardware powered by Oculus in partnership with Samsung. This hardware solution works with Samsung’s S7 Phone plus a plastic headset. Average hardware cost is US $1.100. This is a cost-effective solution for marketing events where the goal is to show content to a large group of people aiming at a similar visual quality than that of the Oculus, but without its interaction capabilities.
Google Cardboard is a low-end solution. It only needs a phone with Gyro and a cardboard box with lenses that serves as handset. Average cost is US$15 + app user cellphone. This is a cost-effective solution to reach a large number of people at the expense of interaction and visual quality. Users only need to download app and google play and insert the phone into the cardboard.
